For virtualization to work effectively, memory (RAM) proves a key component. We  based our server configuration on the need to support a dozen active virtual machines running Windows XP.

With that in mind, we picked eight DDR2 (double data rate 1) 2GB modules from Kingston. The modules are available in a 4GB kit (two 2GB modules) at a street price of $100.

We chose four KVR667D2D8P5K2/4G kits for a total of 16GB of RAM.

In our experience, Kingston's RAM has proven to be very reliable and quite affordable and has become one of the primary types we use for our test systems.
