Distributor Tech Data further fills out its virtualization offerings through an exclusive agreement to distribute the Parallels Virtuozzo Containers server virtualization software.

Tech Data Corporation has signed an exclusive agreement to distribute the Parallels Virtuozzo Containers server virtualization software, giving VARs another tool for better delivering virtualization technology to their small and midsize business customers.

"Server virtualization offers VARs tremendous opportunities to grow their revenue and deliver more robust data center solutions," said Amy Belcher, director of product marketing for Tech Data's AIS (Advanced Infrastructure Solutions) division.

Parallels said in a statement that Virtuozzo's operating system virtualization approach creates up to10 times more virtual instances, or containers, of the same operating system on a single server. Operating system virtualization makes management simpler and provides higher performance than hardware virtualization, according to the company.

VARs can leverage Parallels Virtuozzo Containers to meet a variety of their customers' virtualization needs, including server consolidation to cut physical space and power consumption, mirroring infrastructure for disaster recovery and business continuity, and simplifying desktop management using virtualized desktop technology, Tech Data and Parallels said.

Virtuozzo Containers can also be used to provision resource use to respond to real-time user demand and for deploying hosted applications on demand, Parallels said.

Parallels formerly dominated the Apple Macintosh desktop virtualization space, and this is its first foray into the server market, Belcher said. Parallels Virtuozzo Containers are compatible with all industry-standard "Wintel"-based, Intel and X86 servers, she said, and the technology is geared for SMBs.

The software will be available starting March 27 to all Tech Data resellers through Tech Data's AIS Division.
