Don’t buy your mom or your favorite moms another bouquet of wilted flowers as a gift to wish her a Happy Mothers Day. Sure, she’ll smile, give you a big hug and thank you. But what she really wants is something digital. You’re not the only one who likes gadgets, you know. Here’s what Mom really wants – compiled by Channel Insider’s staff moms.

- Don’t buy your mom or your favorite moms another bouquet of wilted flowers as a gift to wish her a Happy Mothers Day. Sure, she’ll smile, give you a big hug and thank you. But what she really wants is something digital. You’re not the only one who likes gadgets, you know. Here’s what Mom really wants – compiled by Channel Insider’s staff moms.
- The moms on Channel Insider’s staff are unanimous on this one. They want Kindles. Whether they are reading mysteries, business titles, newspapers or magazines or all of the above – Moms would prefer carrying just one device rather than carrying all these books and periodicals along with them as they wait at dentist appointments, soccer practice, the car repair shop, or any of the other places moms go. The Kindle is available now and is priced at $359, and the Kindle DX with 2.5 times the display space ships this summer and can be pre-ordered now for $489. Too pricey? Consider getting mom an Amazon.com gift card towards her Kindle purchase.
- Mom’s favorite gift she ever got was YOU! Give her something to capture those memories of you – in high definition. The Flip MinoHD, at $229 offers 4 GB of internal memory and 60 minutes of recording time for Mom to get all those smiles and embarrassing moments on high definition video. And it’s easy for Mom to load them onto her PC via the flip out USB connection. Just watch out for when she figures out how to upload them to Facebook and tag you.
- Cause Moms and Grandmoms like to show off their babies and grandbabies to the world. What better way than a digital photo album that lets you add the most recent photos in a Flash? This pocket digital photo album, with a price of about $80, offers a 2.8 inch Active Matrix OLED screen that provides a bright, high-contrast display with wider viewing angles than many LCDs. It holds more than 4,000 digital photos in internal Flash memory that can be organized into 5 different folders that can be selected for individual playback. It runs on a lithium-polymer battery that has about 5 hours of running time.
- This is perhaps the most stylish and feminine notebook out there today – on the outside. On the inside this netbook offers all the standard stuff -- an Intel Atom processor, 1 GB of system memory and the choice of either a 16 GB SSD or a 60 GB HDD. It also comes with a built in webcam, wireless-G connectivity, and weighs just 2.45 pounds. All wrapped up in a package starting at $599. Perfect for moms on the go.
- Featuring Google’s operating system Android, this iPhone killer comes with a price of $179 with a two-year data and voice agreement. It offers Wi-Fi, 3G, instant messaging, GPS functionality, a 3 megapixel camera, a music player with access to Amazon.com’s MP3 store, plus quad-band GSM support. Plus, a smart phone lets Mom keep track of everyone’s schedules, all her contacts and stay connected with you.
- For the Mom who likes to cook and/or bake, an all-in-one kitchen PC like those being introduced by Dell, HP and Asus, may make the perfect gift. Priced at between $600 and $800, these PCs put the touch-screen display and the computer’s guts all in one device. Put it in the kitchen and it becomes the repository for recipes – whether stored locally or bookmarked on the web – plus all kinds of family information such as the group calendar, the list of potential babysitters, or just the quickest and easiest way to check out the local school’s website.
- Because Mom needs somewhere to store all those photographs and videos of you. She can’t bear to get rid of a single one. This external drive gets great reviews and is priced at around $80. Keep in mind, however, that if you give Mom an empty one of these you may be in trouble. Best to put some of her favorite photos on it before giving it to her to personalize the gift.
