Novell announced update versions of three of its PlateSpin Workload Management products, Migrate, Protect and Forge. The key upgrade to these latest versions is support for both Microsoft’s Windows operating system (OS) and the open source Linux OS. These virtualization management solutions, which the company said would be available later in the month, offer live migrations of workloads from anywhere to anywhere, including physical to virtual, virtual to physical, and physical to physical, regardless of operating system.

PlateSpin Migrate version 9, which decouples server workloads from their underlying hardware and enables migration over the network between physical servers, virtual hosts and image archives, includes updated capabilities such as Linux Live Transfer and Linux Live "Server Sync", are aimed at reducing risk and downtime when handling Linux workloads.

PlateSpin Protect 10, designed for flexible workload protection, replicates and recovers server workloads including data, applications and operating systems, offers new features to allow customers to leverage existing virtual infrastructure to create one disaster recovery plan for all server workloads, whether physical or virtual, running both Windows and Linux. A refreshed Web user interface offers an enhanced level of visibility into the recovery process with reports and alerts to facilitate compliance reporting.

PlateSpin Forge 3 an all-in-one, “plug in and protect” hardware appliance protects both physical and virtual servers using embedded virtualization technology. Forge version 3 offers protection for a wider array of workloads, and consolidated disaster recovery for all x86 physical and virtual workloads running Windows and Linux. Additional features include increased memory and storage capacity, smart replication technology and Forge API and Windows cluster protection for business critical workloads.

The PlateSpin Workload Management portfolio of solutions from Novell includes PlateSpin Recon, PlateSpin Migrate, PlateSpin Orchestrate, PlateSpin Protect and PlateSpin Forge and support the company's Intelligent Workload Management strategy, designed to help enable businesses to manage and optimize computing resources in a secure and compliant manner across physical, virtual and cloud environments.

Jim Ebzery, senior vice president and general manager for security, management and operating platforms at Novell, called the ability to migrate and protect at the server workload level is a “critical step” towards the promise of Intelligent Workload Management. “These new PlateSpin products allow organizations to move and protect entire server workloads with ease and flexibility, and help organizations achieve new operational efficiencies and cost savings in the data center-- key enablers for operational and business success," he said.

The company also announced its latest initiative to target High-Performance Computing (HPC), helping customers to balance server workloads using both SUSE Linux Enterprise Server and Windows HPC Server. Through the Microsoft and Novell joint Interoperability Lab in Cambridge, Mass., engineers from both companies are working to create technical solutions that support customers in addressing challenges relative to advancing their technical and business objectives within a mixed-source operational environment.
