Tech Executive Poaches: Top 12 for 2010

Mark Hurd's migration over to HP-rival Oracle has set Silicon Valley's tongues a-wagging, but the hire has hardly been the only big-name HR coup this summer, nor the only lawsuit over a technology company hiring the former employee of a competitor. After all, the industry has become hyper competitive. Keeping up with that tech industry headhunters have kept the game interesting in 2010, with many executives doing the roster shuffle two-step on over to a competitor in order to reap better compensation packages and new career opportunities. Here’s a look at some of the top executives that have been poached by a competitor this year.

Name: David Fischer
Hired By: Facebook
Leaving: Google
In March Fischer hopped from his former post as vice president of global online sales and operations at Google, where he'd worked since 2002, over to Facebook to lead as the vice president of advertising and global operations.

Name: Joanne Olsen
Hired By: Oracle
Leaving: IBM
A 31-year veteran IBMer, Joanne Olsen jumped from the Big Blue ship over to Oracle in June to take a post as senior vice president of on-demand services, a position that has her reporting directly to Larry Ellison.

Name: Pablo Calamera
Hired By: Thumbplay
Leaving: Apple
Most recently a director in Apple's engineering department, Calamera joined Thumbplay in March as chief technology officer. He will help lead the company's technological vision as it builds out a music subscription service to compete with iTunes.

Name: Mark Angelino
Hired By: HP
Leaving: Salesforce.com
Working at Salesforce for only about a year, Angelino was working at the SaaS vendor as an executive vice president in charge of sales, call center and platform services in North America. He's now shifted to HP, where he'll care for $54 billion in enterprise business as the senior vice president of Global Distribution.

Leaving: Microsoft
A longtime Microsoftie who helped shape Windows into what it is today and was one of the early executive champions of improving the company's security strategy, Mike Nash's greener pastures are over at Amazon, where he's been tasked with improving the Amazon Kindle since February.

Name: Charles Quinn
Hired By: HP
Leaving: Dell
HP stole away Quinn from his post as Dell's EMEA vice president to help HP build up its own European and Asian business, a position he started up with in August.

Name: Donald Newell
Hired By: AMD
Leaving: Intel
After serving as a star engineer for Intel for 16 years, Newell departed in August to the company's bitter rival AMD, where he'll act as chief technology officer of the company's server group.

Name: Bill Veghte
Hired By: HP
Leaving: Microsoft
Microsoft is losing Windows executives in droves. In May, HP managed to snag Microsoft's former Windows business senior vice president, Veghte, to lead the company's software and solutions business.

Name: Ted Cahall
Hired By: Microsoft
Leaving: AOL
The years-long exodus from AOL continues, this time featuring a departure from Cahall, who served as chief technology officer and executive vice president as the online business. He took over as Microsoft's corporate vice president for MSN in August.

Name: Nancy Reynolds
Hired By: Kaspersky Lab
Leaving: Dell
Kaspersky scored a coup in January when it stole Reynolds away from Dell to run its channel and help build the security vendor's enterprise customer base.

Name: Michael Capellas
Hired By: Virtual Computing Environment coalition (VCE), formed by Cisco, EMC and VMware

Left: HP
Former HP president and Compaq CEO earlier this year headed over to one of HP’s top rivals, a coalition formed by Cisco, EMC, and VMware focused on data center and private cloud deployment.

Name: John McHugh
Hired By: Brocade
Left: HP
McHugh is credited with building HP’s ProCurve networking business into a billion dollar one. In March he took all his know-how over to a rival networking company, Brocade.
